Comparison: Adrafinil, Modafinil, and Armodafinil
Over the past few years Modafinil and other nootropics, have grown exponentially in their popularity and demand. This inevitably leads to pharmaceutical companies that produce these drugs to earn more, while they cleverly introduce additional products on the market from the same category. Adrafinil and Armodafinil are drugs that satisfy similar needs as Modafinil, which sees customer purchases quite commonly. This article will provide you with an in-depth comparison between the different drugs, their composition and effects. By the end of this, you will be well equipped, not only to understand the differences between them, but also to make qualified decisions as to which substance is for you.
The story started well before Modafinil's. In the early 1970s, Adrafinil showed up as a product by a company called Group Lafon. This pharmaceutical company based in France has created the prodrug, which will eventually lead to the production of Modafinil.
When ingested in the body, Adrafinil is changed into Modafinil, this happens naturally through the normal metabolic processes that happen in the body, hence Adrafinil is a prodrug to Modafinil. Adrafinil was created to satisfy needs related to sleep problems, specifically narcolepsy and sleep apnea. Interestingly enough, Adrafinil is still being used around Europe to treat these conditions, even more than 40 years after this drug was invented.
Beyond its well-known effects to increase alertness and produce a state of wakefulness for the recipient, Adrafinil also hold the ability to normalize sleep cycles. This leads to an increased adoption of the drug for travelers, as well as night shift workers.
By bolstering the production of Hypocretin in the brain, Adrafinil is causing feelings of increased levels of energy for the person taking it. This is not an illusion, as Hypocretin is a neurotransmitter which regulates the levels of alertness and wakefulness you feel.
This is not the only reason for the hyped up feeling, as Adrafinil also positively influences the production of catecholamines, which are neurotransmitters ingrained in the adrenergic system. This promotes an increase in the level of awareness, stamina, focus, as well as an increase in the attention span for the individual.
When talking about the benefits of Adrafinil, its easy to see why this drug is still in use by the medical industry. This drugs is so encompassing that it highly increases the quality of life for its users. Through an increase of Dopamine and Serotonin levels, Adrafinil presents a boost in the mood of the user, as these neurotransmitters are working to lower the amount of fatigue, anxiety and stress a person feels, while at the same time increasing the sensation of pleasurable feelings.
If you've been reading about Adrafinil, you will notice that it has been promoted as a productivity enhancer. The reason for this is quite valid, as the effects of this drug inevitably lead to better moods and well-being. Following the previous statement, this often leads people to have a more positive outlook of life and the results they can produce through activity, clearly affecting the motivation a person feels to finish his or her goals.
Most of the time, when people think about Adrafinil, they assume that this drug is only a stimulant, but it isn't called a nootropic without a significant reason. Aside from all of the stimulatory effects, Adrafinil also provides a boost to memory and recall speed. This happens because it stimulates Glutamate receptors in the brain, which play a major role in memory retention.
This may be the number one reason why Adrafinil is held in such a high regard as a study drug, but keep in mind that this memory enhancing effect isn't going to help everybody in equal measures, but it will be both noticeable and useful for most people.
Easily the best known drug in the nootropic market, and most popular from this bunch. It has a long track record as the most effective way to boost your energy and focus for the length of the whole day. Available under many different brand names, the most popular being, Alertec, Modalert, Provigil, Modvigil and Alertex. Most of the brands offer the generic version of the drug, while some bring unique production to the markets, with carefully chosen producers.
Just like its precursor drug, Adrafinil, Modafinil is a Racemic mixture as well. While generally similar, Modafinil can boast with a faster onset and a greater length of the effects.
Under the same research made by Group Lafon, the previously mentioned French pharmaceutical company, which led them to the production of Modafinil. Marketed as a product that promotes wakefulness and alertness, Modafinil is used to treat narcolepsy and sleeping disorders. It is strange how a stimulant can help people with sleeping disorders, but the benefits have been proven many times.
Interestingly, Modafinil seems to provide fully healthy adults with a large variety of benefits, which often leads people to take the drug in order to boost their productivity. As a central nervous system stimulant, Modafinil boosts both physical and mental energy levels and provides users with an almost unending supply of will-power.
A lot of people have tried putting Modafinil to the test, with one person attempting to put together an IKEA table, by taking the pill after 24 hours of not sleeping. Safe to say, the table is probably used to hold coffee mugs and other items ever since.
When compared to Adrafinil, one can notice a high level of similarity between the two. Just like its precursor, Modafinil offers an increase in memory and recall, successfully boosting the learning capabilities of the user. Following the reports of many different people, Modafinil seems to alleviate the difficulty of daily tasks, most likely due to the fact that it prolongs the attention span, as well as the increase in concentration and focus.
Modafinil has effects that last a long time, (about 10 to 14 hours depending on your body type and overall chemical structure) and this leads people to prefer modafinil more than other stimulants on the market, such as caffeine or amphetamines (Adderall). All in all it provides a consistent experience for people for a long duration, so they don't end up feeling burnt-out in the middle of the day.
Modafinil or Adrafinil?
When initially weighing in the decision to either purchase Modafinil or Adrafinil, there are a few things that you need to consider. Depending on the country in which you reside, these substances will have different legal statuses. In the USA for example, Adrafinil is easily available over the counter, while Modafinil requires a doctor's prescription to purchase.
When considering the effects of these substances, you need to know that they are essentially the same, with differences in duration and onset. Adrafinil is slower to produce the effects and its duration is shorter. Modafinil on the other hand produced effects much faster, and when compared to its precursor, the duration is significantly longer.
Its best to stay on the safe side and consult with a doctor about both of these substances.
Armodafinil or Modafinil?
Let's take a look at Armodafinil and how it came about. Introduced into the market in 2007 by a pharmaceutical company called Cephalon. While it's been actively marketed as a better version of Modafinil, this might not be entirely true. Armodafinil is being sold under brands like: Artvigil, Biryth, Nuvigil, Waklert and Armod.
Compared to Modafinil, their chemical structure is incredibly similar, but there are differences as well. We said before that Modafinil is a racematic mixture, and so Armodafinil is precisely half of what Modafinil is. It is considered an enantiopure drug, which contains only one of the two available enantiomers (R or S). Armodafinil contains the R enantiomer, which is a more potent choice from both of the enantiomers, present in Modafinil as well.
Armodafinil is much stronger because of this enantiopure presence and hence the doses are usually about 50mg lower when compared to Modafinil's nominal dose of 200mg. While the effects have the same length of duration, with the missing S enantiomer Armodafinil takes its time to reach a peak state for the user.
We believe that this drug Armodafinil is a product from a series of research trials that these companies conduct consistently. When we take a look at the business side of things, Cephalon Inc. acquired the company responsible for the invention of Modafinil, Group Lafon. The buyout happened in late 2001, close to the new year. With this, the patent for Modafinil production came in their possession.
With Modafinil's patent expiring in 2010, they would only have about eight years of profits left with the exclusive production of Modafinil. They needed a new option that would ensure profits for them. Armodafinil, even though it has produced more headaches for users in research studies comparing Modafinil and Armodafinil. The only upside to Armodafinil may be that it indeed takes more time to activate, enabling users to benefit later in their day, but requiring them to experiment and time the onset.
Following patent laws, which allow for different formulations of the same drug to be treated as completely different drugs, enabling an exclusive production to the company that did the research and conducted the production experiments. Since Armodafinil was basically created with minimum amounts of research (since it's half of what Modafinil is), Cephalon has exclusivity over two different drugs for a while, before completely switching their marketing efforts towards Armodafinil.
Modafinil is the original, and what is today referred as Armodafinil can already be found in the generic form of Modafinil. If Armodafinil was a true innovation, we would raise Cephalon in the air and cherish them, but instead of producing better nootropics and really finding new solutions to old problems, they are utilizing what they already have and selling it on the market, like it was something new. While we can't blame them for doing this, we cannot respect the move.
It is up to you to make a choice for the drug you already know and love, or something that is half of it, marketed as something brand new and innovative.
